Wearable Art!

Today we wanted to feature the designer Claire Prebble. She has created costumes for the Navi charactors in Avatar and her work has been sought after for a shoot with Kate Moss and requested for a Vogue Italia shoot. Her work is described as full body jewelry that is woven from sterling silver. Like Bel Air Jewelry, she has an eye for design and fashion. Her creations are fantastical and creative. We wanted to inspire our clients to be creative with the jewelry they select. Diamonds may be forever, but don’t be afraid to try a brilliant blue, or flaming yellow sapphire! Reach for the stars, and you just might hit the moon!

Martin Luthar King, Jr. Day

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He advanced civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs that attracted national attention following television news coverage of the brutal police responses to protests. King also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. In order to honor this brilliant, brave man; we at Bel Air Jewelry took a piece of his speech and wanted to share it with you today. We hope you enjoy the holiday this monday and remember the importance of standing up for equality and freedom for all religions, races, sexes and beliefs.

“We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children…” -Martin Luther King, Jr.

January Born

Garnet, the birthstone for January,  signifies eternal friendship and trust.  Garnet, derived from the word granatum, meaning seed, and is called so because of the gemstone’s resemblance to a pomegranate seed.  References to the gemstone dates back to 3100 B.C., when the Egyptians used garnets as inlays in their most prominent jewelry settings.  When thinking of Garnets, most people think of a beautifully rich red color, however the mineral comes in a rainbow of hues, from the deepest of crimsons, to pyrope, and even vibrant green tsavorites. Don’t let this January pass without exploring a world of color with the famous January birthstone by Bel Air Jewelry.

Five More Tips For Staying Warm!

#1 – Check that all heat registers are adjusted open, especially where plumbing pipes might freeze. Unblock cold air returns in heated rooms (they may be blocked with furniture or rug) so heat can circulate efficiently.

#2 – Put down a rug or carpet. Rugs and carpets help prevent heat loss through the floor. They are generally warmer to the touch than wood or stone, and so offer a warmer surface to walk on.

#3 – Add insulation in the attic and the crawl space. A lot of heat escapes through the attic, as warm air rises and cold air sinks. Make sure that your attic has enough insulation.

#4 – Cook. Bake cookies or a pie. Your oven will help to dry the air and heat the kitchen. The kitchen will be warm while you are cooking, and then you can have a great home cooked meal too! Limit cooking that gives off steam, as this will increase the humidity in the air and make your house damp. Lowering humidity in the winter time helps you to feel warmer. Water vapor (humidity) has a greater heat capacity (ability to absorb heat) than dry air. As a result, humid air feels colder in winter than does dry air and it takes more heat to make damp air feel comfortable.

#5 – Light a candle. A candle/candles can produce a lot of heat, just be mindful of where they are placed and do not leave them unattended. A trip to most any grocery store or discount store can provide you with a number of candles cheap! You can also use a candle heater. It doesn’t create as much heat as a fireplace or real heater, but will create warmth very cheaply.

From all of us at Bel Air Jewelry, keep bundled up out there!

Everything You Know About Getting Warm Is Wrong

Huffington Post has a timely article about methods for staying warm in the coming months; what works, and what just makes the situation even worse. Here’s an excerpt: “…Drinking alcohol lowers your core body temperature, increases your risk for hypothermia and prevents your body from naturally shivering to keep warm. The reason why you feel warm while drinking alcohol is that your blood vessels dilate and send warm blood away from your core and towards your skin. This effect is only temporary and in the end significantly decreases your body’s ability to fight the cold…” So enjoy the festivities from Bel Air Jewelry, but bundle up and maybe drink some coffee or tea to warm the blood instead!

Tips To Survive The Holiday Season

1. Pay cash. No, that’s not hopelessly old-fashioned. When you’re out of money, you’re out of money.

2. Know thy enemy. If you’re going to pay by credit card, use the one with the most favorable terms. That may sound obvious, but many people carry as many as five bank cards in their wallets and don’t always know what the interest rate is on each card.

3. Keep a running tally of your credit-card spending. When you come home from a day of shopping, immediately subtract what you’ve spent from your checking-account balance. Not only does that give you a visual record of how much you’ve spent, but also it ensures that you’ll have enough money in the account to pay the bill when it arrives.

4. Have a plan for paying off your bills. If you overspent last year, it’s time to cut back. But slashing your budget in half can be like trying to quit smoking cold turkey — it often doesn’t work. Instead, come up with a more realistic goal.

5. Get easy gifts out of the way early. Set aside money for cash gifts — to the paper boy, the babysitter, the hairdresser, out-of-town nephews — before Thanksgiving. That way those presents don’t have to come out of your December shopping budget.

6. Make a list. Don’t dismiss this advice as too simplistic. Writing down which stores you’ll visit and which gifts you plan to buy helps focus your shopping excursion and makes the chore more pleasant because you don’t get caught up in holiday hysteria.

7. Think outside the gift box. Plenty of alternatives are less expensive, and more fun, than buying a gift for everyone. Instead, have a family gift exchange in which you each choose one name and put more thought than money into selecting a single gift.

8. Be creative with the kids. Let’s say you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World during winter break or spring vacation. Stuff the kids’ stockings with guidebooks, maps and Disney memorabilia, and let them plan their excursion. You’ll save money on holiday gifts, and they’ll enjoy weeks of pleasure without becoming bored.

9. Look ahead to next year. If you came up short on cash this year, start an old-fashioned holiday-club online savings account. You can easily set up an automatic transfer from your checking account each month, earn a competitive rate of interest, and have a tidy sum when next holiday season rolls around.

10. Enjoy! Don’t forget this holiday season is about showing the ones you love, just what they mean to you. Stay connected and plan ahead. Good luck out there holiday shoppers, from all of us at Bel Air Jewelry!
