Four Things You Didn’t Know About Year Of The Horse!

ImageAs the Chinese say goodbye to the year of the snake, we look at four things you really should know about the year of the horse

The 15-day celebration of Chinese new year started last Friday, with the first new moon of the calendar year. The day marks the end of the year of the snake and welcomes the start of the year of the wooden horse. To bring you luck this new year, Bel Air Jewelry has listed four things you possibly didn’t know about the year ahead.

1) The Chinese zodiac – or Shēngxiào – is a calendar system originating in the Han dynasty (206-220BC), which names each of the years in its 12-year cycle after an animal: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, in that order. According to the system, the universe is made up of five elements – earth, water, fire, wood and metal – which interact with the 12 animals, resulting in the specific character of the year ahead.

2) People born in the year of the horse are said to be a bit like horses: animated, active and energetic – they love being in a crowd. They are quick to learn independence – foals can walk minutes after birth – and they have a straightforward and positive attitude towards life. They are known for their communication skills and are exceedingly witty. Those born in the year of the horse enjoy being in a crowd.

3) If you were born in the year of the horse, you should be looking for potential partners who were born in the years of the tiger, goat or dog. Avoid those born in the year of the rat, ox, rabbit or horse. You won’t like them.

4) If none of this rings true, don’t worry. The animal signs of each year merely indicate how others see you or how you choose to present yourself. There are also animal signs for each month, known as inner animals, signs for each day, called true animals, and animals for each hour, or secret animals.

Our next blog will have four more insights into the new year, keep reading so you can ride this pony all the way to the bank!

Horse Power

Image

From all of us at Bel Air Jewelry we wanted to wish you a Happy Chinese New Year! Yesterday officially ended the fire snake, and year of the wood horse has begun. So what’s in store for us this year? We’ve reviewed some popular websites and compiled the best predictions here, enjoy!

Shake rattle and roll:

It will be a fast year full of combustion according to some astrologers, who see wood as providing fuel for the energetic horse sign. The later part of the year is “yin fire”, increasing the potential for heated entanglements. Feng shui practitioner Raymond Lo told Reuters: “The upcoming Horse year is also a ‘yang wood’ year, when people will stick more to their principles and stand firm. So it is hard to negotiate or compromise as there are more tendencies for people to fight for their ideals.”

Money, money, money:

If you have a business involving wood or fire you will do well, according to Canadian Feng Shui expert Paul Ng. This includes lumber companies, agriculture and media companies. Property companies won’t do as well and as the horse is a galloper, the potential is for the prices to gallop downwards over the first six months. However, supported by the fire element in the latter half of the year they may gallop back up, according to Lynn Yap, Singapore’s Feng Shui Queen.

The mirror is looking back:

When horse meets horse, the natural Ying-Yang opposition is no longer balanced and thus over the next year horses are due some tense situations and pressure in their personal life. However Foon Chik, of the Feng Shui Society says it is not that simple and meeting your own sign can be a time for self-reflection.

Not a horse:

Well, what animal you are depends on what year you were born in and how the characteristics of this creature interact with the horse. Foon Chik, of the Feng Shui society has compiled her predictions, reproduced here with her permission. You can read them in full here.

2013 Comes To A Close

ImageThe Shēngxiào (literally “birth likeness”), also known in English as the Chinese zodiac (in Western Astrology meaning “circle of animals”), is a scheme and systematic plan of future action, that relates each year to an animal and its reputed attributes, according to a 12-year cycle. The zodiac traditionally begins with the sign of the Rat. The following are the twelve zodiac signs (each with its associated Earthly Branch) in order and their characteristics. In Chinese astrology the animal signs assigned by year represent what others perceive you as being or how you present yourself.

If you were born in the Year of the Snake 2013 was significant for you because 2013 was the Year of the Snake. But hold on, because on the 30th  the Snake is coming to an end and Year of the Horse will begin the Chinese New Year. From all of us at Bel Air we hope you had an amazing Snake year! Adorn yourself with something signifying the sleek ringlets of the beautiful snake before it slithers away with our Two Row Squared-shaped Emerald and Diamond Bracelet.

Pink Is The Color Of Love!

ImageA Sapphire is a gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, an aluminium oxide. Trace amounts of other elements such as iron, titanium, chromium, copper, or magnesium can give corundum blue, yellow, purple, orange, or a greenish color. Chromium impurities in corundum yield a pink or red tint, like the dazzling French Cut Pink Sapphire Diamond Earrings by Bel Air Jewelry.

Pink (first used as a color name in the late 17th century) is a pale red color, which takes its name from the flower of the same name. According to surveys in Europe and the United States, pink, especially when combined with white or pale blue, is the color most commonly associated with femininity, sensitivity, tenderness, childhood, and the romantic. However, when combined with violet or black, it is associated with eroticism and seduction. Let your inner magnet prowl and adorn yourself with anything pink this winter!

Wearable Art!

Today we wanted to feature the designer Claire Prebble. She has created costumes for the Navi charactors in Avatar and her work has been sought after for a shoot with Kate Moss and requested for a Vogue Italia shoot. Her work is described as full body jewelry that is woven from sterling silver. Like Bel Air Jewelry, she has an eye for design and fashion. Her creations are fantastical and creative. We wanted to inspire our clients to be creative with the jewelry they select. Diamonds may be forever, but don’t be afraid to try a brilliant blue, or flaming yellow sapphire! Reach for the stars, and you just might hit the moon!

Martin Luthar King, Jr. Day

Image

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He advanced civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs that attracted national attention following television news coverage of the brutal police responses to protests. King also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. In order to honor this brilliant, brave man; we at Bel Air Jewelry took a piece of his speech and wanted to share it with you today. We hope you enjoy the holiday this monday and remember the importance of standing up for equality and freedom for all religions, races, sexes and beliefs.

“We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children…” -Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Image

The Wolf of Wall Street was based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. Leonardo DiCaprio depicts a suave, brilliant business man devouring life at an insatiable speed. The films itself was a staggering three hours of living the high-life to absolute debauchery. In it’s finer moments, the costumes and cast are beautifully touting the highest quality of, well, everything! We at Bel Air Jewelry were inspired to nudge the men out there to reach for classier attire. Check out our white gold sapphire diamond cufflinks, and don’t be afraid to let your inner class extend outward… just don’t go Belfort on us!
